Welcome to the Indian River Lagoon Website
This website is a partnership of various organizations, scientists, researchers and other individuals with an interest in the Indian River Lagoon. The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is a unique, highly diverse, shallow-water estuary of national significance stretching along 40 percent of Florida’s east coast. While the IRL’s environmental importance is clear, the lagoon is also an economic engine, generating more than $3.7 billion per year to the state of Florida. Click here to view the IRL economic assessment and analysis update.
Urbanization, excessive freshwater releases, contaminant loading, degradation of water quality, loss of habitat such as seagrasses and mangroves, decline of fisheries, and emerging diseases in marine mammals have all affected the health of the IRL. These challenges affect not only our lagoon, but also estuaries and coastal waters throughout the world.
The purpose of this website is to disseminate scientific research, monitoring, and management efforts currently being conducted in the lagoon. This dissemination will inform policy related to management of the IRL and increase public awareness of the IRL and its ecological and economic importance.
As this website evolves, our expectation is for it to serve as a useful tool, portal, and aggregator of information for researchers, resource managers, and the general public.
We welcome your suggestions on ways to make this site as functional and interactive as possible.
